But why is sleep so important?

Why is sleep so important? Why do children benefit from these suggest amounts of sleep per day? Won't they just catch up as they get older? There's so many questions around the benefits of sleep especially in early childhood and if its really as important as people say it is. Well how do you feel when you are tired? Do you get the most out of your day? Do you feel emotional balanced when you're exhausted?
