How many of us have either asked or wondered this? I know I did, even second time around- that's because every baby is different and there isn't a time set in stone.
Perhaps not the answer you were looking for hey?
Well, all is not lost!
Do any of us 'sleep through?' It really depends what we are classing as sleeping through. I know I don't always. I often wake up for the toilet, to readjust my pillows or to open / shut a window and then there's times I don't remember waking/ semi waking. Like with everything you will find some babies sleep great from the start, some take longer to get there and some benefit from a helping hand- all 'normal'!
Lets first talk about sleep. From around four months of age our sleep stages mature, sleep is now made up of more stages and it is at this time you might start to notice that your little one manages longer stretches of sleep at night. Between their sleep cycles our little ones might wake up and if they aren't confident with self settling they might require help to fall back into the next cycle.
What if my baby can self settle but still wakes up? Our little ones might wake for a number of reasons including but not limited to- outside interference from noise/ light, unwell, hungry, teething, too much day sleep, developmental changes and more. It's important to make their sleep environment one that works for them- dark, cool, calm (none distracting) and quiet. If they have a good routine to help them prepare for sleep, tied in with a good sleep environment, the right day time sleep and are able to self settle then the other factors that might disturb them shouldn't be long lasting.
So lets go back to the start, each baby will 'sleep through' at different ages. However, there are steps we can take to assist them with this, by finding ways that work for you both/all.
